Jesus used this phrase in a late-night conversation with a religious leader named Nicodemus, who took it literally and was baffled. Jesus meant something spiritual, not biological: a fresh start given by God, not just self-improvement.
For most Christians, being “born again” isn’t a separate club within Christianity — it describes what happens, in some sense, to anyone who genuinely turns to Jesus in faith and repentance. Some traditions and churches use the phrase more as a badge of a specific conversion experience; others use it less, while holding a similar underlying idea of spiritual renewal.
