In the New Testament, “church” (Greek: ekklesia, “assembly”) almost always means a gathering of people, not a building. Christians believe the church exists wherever believers meet to worship, learn, support one another, and serve others.
Church buildings and organised denominations developed over time and vary hugely — from vast historic cathedrals to small living-room gatherings. Christians disagree on structure and leadership (bishops, elders, congregational leadership) but broadly agree the church is meant to be a real, practical community, not just an idea.
