In John’s Gospel especially, Jesus describes eternal life as knowing God, starting in the present rather than only after death. It’s about the quality and depth of a restored relationship with God, not simply a very long lifespan.
Christians also believe eternal life includes a future dimension: resurrection and unending life with God beyond death. The two ideas sit together — a relationship that starts now and continues forever.
