Popular imagination often pictures heaven as clouds, harps and floating souls. The Bible’s picture is different and, in some ways, more physical: a renewed creation, described in Revelation as a new heaven and new earth, where God lives fully among his people.
Many Christians hold together two ideas: being with God after death, and a future, fuller bodily resurrection when creation itself is renewed. Christians understand the time in between differently — some traditions, for example, speak of purification, and some describe it as a kind of rest — and these details are held more loosely than the central hope itself.
