How do I actually pray?
Here's the entire answer, before any of the detail: prayer is talking to God.
Things you don't need
- Special wordsYour normal vocabulary is fine, including the unflattering bits.
- A church buildingA bus, a kitchen, a car park at 2am. All equally valid.
- A particular positionKneeling, walking, lying down, eyes open. It genuinely doesn't matter.
- To sound religiousNobody is marking this. Sounding religious is not the same as being honest.
- To already be a ChristianPeople pray before they believe all the time. Often that's where it starts.
What one actually looks like
God… I don't even know if You're there.I don't really know what I believe.But I'm curious.Help me understand.
That's a prayer.
No formula. No qualifications. You just said the true thing.
What prayer includes
Speaking. Asking for things. Saying thank you. Admitting the stuff you'd rather not say out loud. Complaining, at length, in a bad mood.
And sometimes none of those — just being quiet, without producing anything. That counts too, and a lot of people find it the hardest part.
Being honest about what prayer isn't
Prayer is not a request form that gets processed. Christianity does not promise you'll get what you ask for, and it doesn't promise that praying will make your life easier or more successful. Anyone teaching that is selling something.
Answers, when Christians describe them, often don't arrive in the shape or the timescale anyone expected. And not every coincidence afterwards is a message — sometimes a thing just happens.
What plenty of people do report is that prayer changes the person praying. That's not nothing, and it's not a consolation prize either.

Just say it plainly. A situation, a person, a mess.

You're allowed to ask directly. You're also allowed to ask for nothing.
Small things count.
