The Bible describes God repeatedly making covenants with people: with Noah, Abraham, Moses and the nation of Israel, and finally what Christians call the “new covenant” through Jesus. Each involves God committing himself to his people, often with promises attached.
Unlike a business contract between equals, a covenant with God is initiated by God out of love and commitment, not negotiated between matched parties. Christians see Jesus’ death as establishing a new covenant that fulfils and reshapes the earlier ones.
